Nadine was born in Vancouver BC Canada. Her love of art started in grade school. Growing up she used paint by number as the only outlet for painting. During high school she excelled at graphic arts. Pursuing a career in another direction, she continued with art on the side taking a correspondence drawing course and a local watercolour workshop.
It wasn’t until Nadine settled on the Sunshine Coast that art became a need to feed her soul again with more workshops on art technique. She took a few workshops in Acrylic. Nadine felt the need to explore other mediums on her own, exploring pencil, pencil crayon, pastel, watercolour, ink, and most recently oil pastel.
Nadine likes to paint things that inspire her and often challenge her to grow in her art and technique. She likes detail and the time required to do detail soothes her soul, brings her joy and is often a zen-like activity that brings her peace.
She was focused on finding her medium of choice by practicing on many different papers, canvas, and using different combinations of techniques and supplies. She has since decided that pastels, soft and oil pastels, are her favourite medium, but when she gets bored she does other mediums for a change.
Nadine has not taken any University courses on art, but has taken workshops from other artists, to understand technique, although she would rather just learn from books, DVD's, the internet and practice.
The public had not seen Nadine’s work because she was a closet artist all her life feeling like she was not good enough to show to the public. She had given all her art away to family and friends.
Nadine liked to colour and draw as a young child. When she was 6 she drew a baseball player swinging a bat. She was very proud of that drawing, but then someone stole it. It was very devastating that something she was very proud of got stolen and no adults did anything about it. Looking back, it was impressive enough that someone really wanted it. She still remembers that drawing today. Nadine continued to draw, but was not encouraged through her life by any family members to keep doing it, She was told she is not a “natural” therefore not an artist, (one who can do art without trying so hard).
Recently, within the past 10 years she started doing it for herself and honouring her inner child instead. It gives her great joy to be able to create art, even if it is just for her closet.
